Key economic drivers

Leduc County offers an economic advantage. Conveniently located within major air, rail and road networks, the County is home to the Nisku Business Park, Edmonton International Airport (YEG) and Capital Power’s Genesee Generating Station.

The Nisku Business Park is home to more than 800 of businesses in a variety of sectors, including energy, food processing, transportation and logistics and advanced manufacturing.

Together, the Nisku Business Park and Leduc Business Park form the second-largest energy manufacturing industrial park in North America and the largest in Canada. The Leduc Business Park is located just south of the Nisku Business Park in the City of Leduc.

Leduc County is home to Edmonton International Airport (YEG), Canada’s fifth busiest airport and largest major airport by land size. YEG serves more than 8.2 million passengers per year and offers non-stop connections to more than 50 destinations around the world.

YEG is one of only three cargo airports in Canada with a 24-hour operational capacity. Currently, it is home to eight integrated couriers/freight carriers, three independent cargo handlers, more than 40 freight forwarders and customs brokers and six cargo-handling terminals.

In July 2022, it was announced that a new 2,000 acre cargo handling hub will be built at the airport after a $100 million investment from the federal government. With this investment, YEG will expand its multi-modal distribution throughout Canada, the United States and Mexico.

Located in the west end of the County near the Village of Warburg, Capital Power’s Genesee Generating Station consists of three generating units that provide more than 1,300 MW of baseload generation to Albertans.

The Genesee Generating Station is a hub of innovation as the facility is transformed to utilize natural gas. Capital Power is also planning to deploy carbon capture, utilization and sequestration (CCUS) solutions at the site.
